Junior explorers are getting ready for Halloween - they produced great art for the classroom wall - pumpkins and autumn leaves.

Sixth class had great fun creating seasonal slime! Experimenting with combinations of PVA glue, contact lens saline solution, bread soda and borax (substitute!) and then mixing in some food colouring and glitter, we had some great gooey success!

We took a stroll in 'Princess Grace Woodland Park' today. We were keeping an eye out for the signs of autumn.  

Well done to all the boys and girls who played in the Seán Chambers Cup and Shield over the weekend. A huge congratulations to the winning teams.   

Our Senior Explorers are really enjoying their swimming lessons in Hotel Westport every Tuesday!

Space week ran from Oct 4th to Oct 10th this year. We, in third/fourth class, invited Derek Dempsey to give us a talk and presentation about space. We were happy that he was able to come in to the school. He told us about the planets and dwarf planets in our solar system and showed us cool photos taken from space. We learned about Olympus Mons, the highest known mountain in the solar system. It is also a volcano and we had been studying volcanoes last week too. We learned that the red spot on Jupiter is actually a storm. It has been raging for nearly two hundred years!

We learned that some planets are made from gas and some from ice. We also saw a video about Cassini, a probe sent from Earth to study the far away planets. It was crash landed on Saturn last month after travelling since 2004. We then drew our own planets and named them and their moons. 

The boys and girls were treated to a session at 'Railyard Fitness' today. They had great fun trying out a number of new exercises. 

Irish Road Safety Week 2017 runs from 2nd-8th of October. 2nd and 3rd class have been learning about how they can stay safe on the roads and the importance of wearing high-visibility clothing. Some children were even lucky enough to receive some hi-viz goodies from the RSA. 

Every term we hold a collection day where people can bring in bags of unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, belts, linens etc.

This term's collection was WED 11 OCTOBER.  675kg of clothes were collected by Lenrec Recycling.

All money raised goes to the school.  Many thanks for your support!

Last week, Ms O'Malley brought us to the woods. I could hear birds singing I could also see acorns. We took lots of photos. For the first one we sat on a bench and for the other Caolan, Cillian, Eoin, William and I got one too.

The leaves were super crunchy. The leaves were changing colour to red, orange, yellow and brown. There were so much blackberries but I did not eat any because they were not ripe.

We received notice of maths classes for parents...

Dear Principal,

I will be running classes for parents to help them learn maths, introduce them to the new methods their children are using today, and to help them support their children with their maths homework.

This informal learning group will run on Mondays from 6:30-8:30 at Westport College of Further Education.  I would appreciate if you could pass this information on to parents.

Derek Dempsey of Newport Astronomy Club will visit 3rd and 4th class this WEDNESDAY 4th OCTOBER, to give a talk on our Solar System.  The talk will start straight after lunch in Ms O'Malleys/Ms Finnerty's classroom

This talk was given last year to 5th and 6th class and the feedback was great so we are delighted to welcome Derek back to the school !

Our girls team WON the West Mayo Mini-Sevens competition on Tuesday 26 September

Teams in the group were Myna, Mulranny, Scoil Phádraig, Brackloon, Knockrooskey, Gaelscoil na Cruaiche, Cogaula/Cloggernagh, Carraholly, Fahy, Louisburgh and the Quay NS

Well done girls - you did us proud as always!

Our Junior explorers are planting spring bulbs now!  Some planted daffodils and tulips and others planted hyacinths - which we hope will be ready for Christmas!

Check out our three athletes who took part in today's Mayo finals of the Schools cross country competition in Belleek! 

In the boys 3rd and 4th class category Caolan Moran came 22nd out of 120 participants.

In the girls 5th and 6th category Ava Kelly came 36th out of 116 participants.

In the boys 5th and 6th class category Mathew Horan came 14th out of 117 participants.

Well done to all three - a fantastic achievement for themselves and for the school.

Fr Tod's Good News Club starts up again THIS SUNDAY at 10am Mass in Newport Church. The Club meets during Mass on the last Sunday of every month for children from 4 years of age up to 1st Class.  All welcome!

Registration for indoor soccer teams will take place in the Plaza Hotel (Ebony Suite) on Thursday 21st Sep at 9pm. 

There will be a meeting for parents Wed 20 Sep at 7:30pm in Newport NS to form teams, appoint managers, collect fees etc.

Remember - Junior Infants will finish school at 2pm from Monday 18th September onwards!

Newport is embarking on an exciting development - wotking with engineers, planners, architects and heritage officers from Mayo County Council to devise a Town Design statement for the town.  The first phase of forming the steering group has been completed and the second phase - PUBLIC CONSULTATION - will take place TUESDAY 12th September between 5pm and 9pm in Hotel Newport.  EVERYONE is invited to drop in and give their opinion on how Newport might develop with regard to parking, pedestrian crossings/traffic calming, derelict buildings, streetscapes, cycle routes, shopfronts, signage, public parks, social spaces etc etc.

This is a drop-in event so come at a time that suits you between 5pm and 9pm

We have begun harvesting our carrots! we are delighted with the crop and the quality of these wonderful organic carrots, planted by the explorers class in June!!

Ava Kelly, Mayo's most avid fan (probably), has been chosen to be a flag bearer at the All-Ireland football final on September 17th.

Such a prize could not have gone to a more devoted fan.

All of the staff and pupils at Newport N.S. are extremely proud of Ava and we look forward to seeing her supporting our great team on the day! UP MAYO!!!

We are delighted to welcome you all back to Newport NS.  A special welcome for our new infants!

Some dates for your diaries...

- School photos will be taken next Wednesday 6th September so make sure everyone is wearing their full school uniform.

- We will have a used clothing collection on the 11th of October, so start collecting now.

- NEW school lunches will start 18th September.  In the meantime, children will receive the same lunch they were getting in June, and new infants will receive a small bread and butter sandwich.  Of course you can also opt to send in a lunch with your child - just remember to avoid egg and nut products.

Junior Infants ended a very happy year with a fun teddy bear's picnic. Everyone brought a special teddy and some treats for the picnic. we sang songs, told stories and gave the teddies some fun on the parachute! A fun time was had by all!

Junior Infants released their very own butterflies today. We watched them morph from caterpillars into butterflies and it was a wonderful experience!

we harvested our new potatoes today - what a crop!!  we then cooked them in Masterchef Newport style!

We had the most wonderful sports day. From 3 legged races to balloon races (including the pops), it was fun from start to finish. Who knew there were going to be ice pops too! The pictures will tell the story!

First class had a wonderful day on our school tour in Achill.  Our first stop was the deserted village where we learned about what life was like 200 years ago.  We discovered that it was normal for about fourteen people to live in a house that was not much bigger than our bedroom.  What was even more surprising was that these people had to share the house with a cow, a pig and some chickens!  We then went to the aquarium.  We saw lobsters, sea urchins, scallops and a baby shark.  We held a starfish and were spat at by a clam!  After our tour of the aquarium we did an art workshop where we created our own lobster and decorated their tank.  We finished the day at a nearby restaurant where we had a lovely lunch before returning home to Newport.

First class made beautiful pinch pots out of clay.  We left them to dry and then painted them the following week.

A huge 'Thank You' and 'Well Done' to all the fantastic musicians who participated in music class throughout the year. There are various summer music schools nearby, such as Westport Scoil Cheoil and Scoil Acla, run over the summer months, if you wish to keep your practice up! 

Junior explorers enjoying sports day

Our vegetables are doing very well - we have beetroot, peas, carrots and our potatoes are almost ready to pick!

On 30th May, 6th class went to Burrishoole Abbey. When we got there the Teacher gave us all a sheet of tracing paper and some worksheets. She then split us into groups. There was a map of the Abbey on the worksheet and we had to find certain things and mark them on the map. Then we all sat down and ate lunch. After that we took the tracing paper and we had to find a grave that was as old as possible and do a rubbing of it with a crayon. We took some photos and walked back to school. We all really enjoyed our trip to the Abbey and we learned a lot about the history of the Abbey.

Fr. Tod Nolan treated the 5th and 6th class pupils from Newport, Mulranny and Cuilmore schools to goodies as a reward for their participation in the 'You Shall Be My Witnesses' Confirmation programme.

The children enjoyed the treats after a fun Gaelic football blitz held at Burrishoole GAA grounds.
