Our 'Giant' Mural

You will recall that back in September and October 2017 the pupils of 5th and 6th class participated in a fantastic project called 'The Big Picture' It involved the children travelling to Turlough House AND the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar to work with Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch. They enjoyed a writing workshop, followed by an illustrating workshop. The challenge was to complete a story entitled, "The Young Prince and the Giant", which was started by an unknown pupil from Skerdagh NS in 1930. They created a stunning mural depicting the writing of Faye English (fifth class) and Aoibheann McManamon (sixth class). During the workshop they also had the honour of being visited by Aoibheann's grandfather, Jim McManamon, who is 97 years old and was a pupil of Skerdagh NS at around the same time as the original story was written.

The mural, which was created using chalks and pastels, was on display in the Linenhall Arts Centre until very recently and we are delighted to say that it is now in permanent residence in the school!

We'd like to thank our caretaker Ged Gallagher and the outdoor staff from RSS and Tús (and South West Mayo Development Company) for all their hard work getting this large mural (24ft x 7ft in total!) in place - not an easy task by any means.

We think it looks pretty cool!
