Youth Cycling Event

This has come to our attention from Cycling Connacht...

The Gravel Grind West cycling events takes place in West Mayo next weekend the 17th and 18th of September.

We have two bits of news. On Saturday September 17th from 1-3pm we have Ras Tailteann champion Daire Feeley coming to Gravel Grind West weekend to give a coaching session on the introduction to off road cycling. There will be games, skills tests, slow bike races and prizes to give out, open to all kids from 6-14 years of age. All the action is based around the grass area of the Quay Westport and will be a good family day out. Sign in at the Towers bar marquee from 12noon. All the kids need is a bike, helmet and €2, we even have a few spare bikes to try out for those who can't bring their bikes. Kids will get the chance to see the senior gravel riders and their amazing bikes as they gather for the start of the Skelp Blast which kicks off at 4pm from the Quay. On Sunday 18th The main event of the weekend, the Gravel Grind West - its an off road bike event with approximately 200 cyclists from all over the country and will take the coastal route from Westport to Newport passing through the Kilmeena area from 9 to 9-30am and then around Rosduane, Corrgaun, Rosclave, Kilbride from 9.30 to 10am before heading through Newport enroute to the Wild Nephin national park via, Acres grove, Derrada, Furance loop to Shramore from 10 to 11am On their return journey they will pass through Treanbeg, Fauleens, Doogary, Letterlough and Comploon areas from 12 noon to 3pm.

There might be some inconvenience and traffic delays as they pass through. It would be great if the locals along the route would come out and give a cheer or a wave to all the participants. We are bringing participants on a route less travelled and its a great chance to showcase what this area has to offer, the terrain and scenery are majestic.
