Junior Infants' outdoor classroom

Even Junior Infants get to go on a field trip on a sunny Friday! The children enjoyed visiting the MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) next to the school.

Field trip for 6th class

Sixth Class have been discussing national and local tourism as well as place names and meanings as Gaeilge. On Friday 18th (which was a warm, sunny day!), we walked along the Greenway to Burrishoole Abbey which was founded in 1470. The class located the oldest gravestones including the Latin inscription dated 1623 on the O’Kelly altar tomb. We also found the grave of Fr Manus Sweeney (inscription is in old Gaelic lettering) and found etchings of surnames the same as our own. We learned that the site should really be called Burrishoole Friary! The class observed the still perfect wall structures, arch designs in the windows and some doorways and the tidal estuary by the Abbey. We then walked

Science Experiments in 2nd class

On the second week back 2nd class did a quick science experiment. We wanted to see if washing our hands really made a difference. We got 5 slices of fresh bread. After lunch one person did not wash their hands and pressed one hand on a slice of bread which was then bagged. (The child then washed their hands!) The second child just used hand sanitiser and pressed their hand on the bread. The third child just washed their hands with water and pressed their hand into the bread. The fourth child washed their hands properly for 20 seconds using soap and water, dried their hands properly and pressed their hand into the bread. There was a 5th slice and this was the control. Then we waited and the p

Field Trip for 2nd class

2nd class went on a field trip to Princess Grace Park on Thursday 24th September. We collected twigs and leaves for our art and science lessons and enjoyed being out on a beautiful autumn day. We took 'the long way' back around the Quay, past the post office and the oratory. It was a wonderful trip to our outdoor classroom and we hope to do similar trips in the future. Thank you to Ms Noonan for coming with us.

Canon Killeen Park - have your say!

Exciting Times! As many of you are aware, Canon Killeen Park was purchased by NADDCo (Newport And District Development Company) this year and they had hoped to hold a public meeting where your ideas could be gathered and fed in to the final design. With Covid-19 restrictions, a public meeting is just not possible, so the directors of NADDCo have set up on online survey to get input from the community. They are now working with artist and Newport resident Manuel Santiago to sketch designs from the most popular ideas submitted. TO HAVE YOUR SAY, simply click on this link to complete the online survey, and please feel free to share the link with others who might like to have their views heard..

A message from Ms Connolly

Dear Parents, We have now come to the end of our induction phase and I must say the children have settled into the school routine without any major trauma. The only anxiety in the junior infant room is about who is going to be the line leader for the day!! As of Monday 14th September, the children will attend their full school day. Some extra snacks may need to be provided. Hometime: 1.50pm. The children will each stand on a yellow spot outside the school hall yard. The child is free to leave the spot once they can see you. They have an option of exiting to the car park via two exits . We will try this system to see if the handover can be less time consuming, as the senior infants will also

School Photos

We are delighted to announce that COUNTY PHOTOS will visit us to take school photos on MONDAY 12th OCTOBER 2020 You will find attached details of the new Covid safe photography procedures that they have implemented for this year. A major change to their procedure concerns class group photography. Due to social distancing, children cannot be photographed together in a traditional class photo as would have been done in the past. We have the option of creating a collage of individual headshots or a collage of pod groups and will employ the appropriate option for each age group.

End of Week 2!

Dear Parents, We are working away in our pods and bubbles within the school. The children, without exception, have been most cooperative with maintaining the guidelines around Covid-19. You prepared your children very well for the return to school. Thank you to the many parents who took time to send complimentary emails and cards to the school. It tells us how much you value your children's education. We have been working on our communication and telephone system in order to ensure that only a particular adult pod accesses each phone. We have invested in a new system which should also reduce our overall costs. We have however, been made aware that when we ring you, the school number does not
