Application for Book Grant 2020/21

Parents/Guardians A BOOK GRANT is available for qualifying families to help cover the cost of school books for 2020/21. We also run a book rental scheme in order to reduce costs for parents. This means that we purchase books and they are passed on from class to class each year. This year we closed the school on March 12th having been given only three hours notice due to the outbreak of Covid 19. In light of the deficit of information around survival rates of the virus on various materials, a decision was made not to send home books on the rental scheme as we were unsure if they could be reused (which is the purpose of our Book Rental scheme). Apologies for having to do this and we hope that

Feeding time!

I took a short video of the blue tit chicks being fed by their parents today in one of the school's birdboxes...

School Calendar 2020/21

While there are still many decisions to be made about the childrens' safe return to school in September (and we will be keeping you up to date on those as they arise), we thought it would still be helpful for parents to have a copy of the draft calendar for the next school year. This will be updated on our school website as and when any changes are decided, so ALWAYS CHECK THIS WEBSITE'S DOWNLOADS PAGE for the most UP TO DATE calendar!

Chicks in the birdbox!

As you know, we have six birdboxes on the school's north facing wall (ie the one facing Rosmore) and two of these boxes have cameras installed so we can observe any activity. We hope some day to attract swifts, which are becoming endangered in Ireland, but are happy when any species decides to make their home there. On a rare trip to the school to check post today, I spotted that one of the birdboxes is now home to some chicks, being fed by mother and father. They appear to be blue tits (not swifts), though I am not enough of an expert to say for sure - please email us if you can confirm! I couldn't see the chicks themselves as they are too small and right at the back of the birdbox, but w

Order your 6th class hoodie

6th class parents and pupils Now that we have our design and our signatures all sorted, pupils can start placing their orders for their very own 6th class hoodies, using the link at the end of this post. As I mentioned yesterday, we are under a bit of time pressure to have them manufactured and delivered by the end of term, hence the speed at which we are progressing. We are not asking for payment at this stage. I would ask that all orders are placed by 6pm Thursday 14 May. Once I have all the orders in, we can then relax a little and you will have plenty of time to complete the payment, which we will do safely and securely through Aladdin Connect. Some points to note: You will find sizing

I will send out a link to the order form and you can select your COLOUR and SIZE. We will then be able to place an order with the supplier who requires 5 weeks' notice. Once all of that is done, I will set up an online

Communion Day!

We are thinking of all the 2nd class children who were due to make their First Holy Communion today at this time. Thanks to Clodagh McGovern and all the parents, we managed to get lovely photographs of all of them, making the most of their day. Enjoy your day and we hope to see you all again soon!

6th Class Hoodie Design

6th Class Hoodies Sadly we shall not meet again in person before the end of the school year. Before the current school closure, the pupils of 6th class indicated that they were very keen on the idea of designing a commemorative hoodie that each pupil could order in their preferred colour and size, and we would still very much like to make that happen, as a memento of the eight years most of you have spent in Newport National School. Normally we would have a discussion in the classroom to agree the style and design of the hoodie, but, as this is not possible, we are going to ask you to select your preferences via an ONLINE SURVEY. This is the SECOND STAGE of the process. The first stage i

Parents We have received word from the Irish Times about a 'Fighting Words' writing project... For entry info, inspiration and handy story writing tips, see: www.greatlighthouses.com or www.fightingwords.ie Submissions close on May 19th.

Our 9th green flag!

We were delighted to receive this letter today from An Taisce... Dear Green-Schools Coordinator, I am delighted to inform you that your application for the renewal of your Green Flag has been successful. The team at Green-Schools were very impressed with your application, congratulations! Please pass on all our thanks to all the hard-working members of your Green-Schools committees, and everyone in the school. You all deserve a huge amount of credit for your efforts. The work that you are doing is really having a positive impact, and when the work of all schools is combined it’s truly amazing! Unfortunately, due the current situation, we are not in a position to hold our Green-Schools Awards

6th class hoodies

To all in 6th Class: Sadly we will not be back in the classroom before the 6th class pupils finish national school. We would like to organise 6th class commemorative hoodies for the pupils, and are looking at suppliers who can deliver directly to your home, in adherence with social distancing recommendations. The hoodies will have a 'Class of 2020' motif on the front and on the back we will incorporate the signatures of all the pupils in the class. I can't give you an exact price yet as we are still in discussions with a couple of suppliers, but it will be in the region of €25-€30. As there will be a lead-time in getting these ready, we need to start collecting the signatures of the pupils
